Meet the IT Team

Meet Stephen

Stephen is one of our .Net Developers

What do you like best about working here?

Dot Net developers in 123.ie are all full stack developers so every day can involve working on vastly different types of tasks - from UI design to batch service creation etc. While I am a junior developer, I am seen as equal when we are deciding who should work on which task. This gives good variety to my work, and also means I get a range of both challenging and interesting tasks to do in every sprint.

What is unique about your current role?

I think we are unique in 123.ie as we are well ahead of most companies in both automated testing as well as our implementation of Scrum.

Walk us through a typical day in your life?

Developers and QA Analysts work very closely together in 123.ie and so first thing I often have a check in with the QA assigned to my task about what is expected, and we reach an agreement on what the outcome will be. As we work in a Scrum/Agile environment, 10am is usually time for the daily stand up meeting between everyone working on the project. Here everyone will briefly go through what they did yesterday, what they plan on doing today, and if they are faced with any obstacles to completing assigned task. After the stand-up meeting has finished it’s back to work. On a standard day we will work until 12.30 and lunch. As we have invested time in implementing an automated deployment and testing infrastructure there are very rarely days that developers will have to work late hours to support releases or do manual deployments.

Tell us a fun fact about the team.

Every Friday someone goes to the shop and brings back sweets for the whole department.

What stands out, in your opinion, in terms of our development process?

What stands out to me is how we are always trying to improve and keep up to date with current technologies. On Tuesdays we will have our weekly development meetings, in this meeting the development manager updates everyone with the current state of each ongoing project. There is also time during the meeting for any developer to raise any technical issue or suggestion they want to discuss, or any other matters relating to the team. These meetings can be very valuable as it allows a developer to discuss new technologies which allows both us as developers, and 123.ie to continue to progress and use the latest new technologies. This is something we pride ourselves on here.

In your opinion, what is the best perk we offer?

Support for training is an exceptional perk within the company. Whether you want to do a day course on a certain topic or want to look into doing a college course, 123.ie are more than happy to give you time off as well as part fund it.

If you were speaking with someone who was considering joining the 123.ie IT team, what advice would you give them?

I would say that if they were looking for a fast paced environment where the latest technologies are used and they want to advance themselves as a full stack developer then 123.ie is a great place to work.

Meet Fergal

Fergal is one of our QA Analysts

What do you like best about working here?

One of the things I enjoy about working here is that no two days will ever be the same. Every project we work on will have unique challenges which provide a lot of variety on a day-to-day basis and also means that I am constantly improving my QA skillset. As there is so much variety it avoids the monotony that comes with a lot of other roles and means that I enjoy my job a lot more when compared to some of the previous roles I have worked in.

What is unique about your current role?

As mentioned above I think the thing that is unique to my role is how varied every project is. I have worked in a wide variety of different companies/industries in the past and one thing that I found that was often a large contributor to me wanting to find a new job – If the job was monotonous! Having to constantly be on your toes and thinking through solutions to new problems that arise definitely avoids this problem!

Walk us through a typical day in your life.

I typically spend the first few minutes of the day looking over the status of my current project and planning out the tasks I expect to get done before close of business. As we work within an Agile environment we will have a daily stand-up in the morning which allows the team to update everybody on their current progress as well as discuss any challenges they are facing. The bulk of the working day is then spent working through my planned tasks, as well as liaising with the developers that require any input on the features they are currently implementing.

Tell us a fun fact about the team.

All current members of the QA team have come over from other departments within the company! For example, I previously worked on the sales team within the company before this opportunity presented itself. This means that all members of the team are familiar with how the software we work on is used throughout the organisation on a day-to-day basis.

What stands out, in your opinion, in terms of our QA process?

The level of automation that we currently have seems to be far ahead of the curve of a lot of other companies. We are also always looking for ways to improve our overall processes and everyone is expected to contribute to this if they feel that anything we are currently doing could be done more efficiently or effectively. In doing so it allows for a more engaging environment where everybody is listened to with regard to new ideas.

In your opinion, what is the best perk we offer?

I would have to say the best perk I have found working here is the level of support I have received during a Masters degree that I am currently in the process of completing. Not only is part time study supported, but seeking additional qualifications is actively encouraged for any team member that expresses an interest in doing so.

If you were speaking with someone who was considering joining the 123.ie IT team, what advice would you give them?

The advice I would give would be to know that you would be joining a team where a lot is expected. You can learn a lot here as the team as a whole are extremely skilled and we are constantly looking to improve our processes, this creates an environment where if you are willing to put in the work then you will get a lot back out of it as well. As it is a small team there is no hiding behind others! We are rewarded well for hard work with regular organised work nights out. Whilst it is definitely a challenging environment, it is also very enjoyable.
