123GO - FAQ

What is a Black Box?

Put simply, it's a small black box that we fit to your car once you've purchased your 123GO Car Insurance policy. It will be professionally fitted somewhere out of sight and is a little larger than a smart phone.

Once fitted it records information about your driving style; such as Speed, Smoothness (acceleration & braking for example) and Usage (when and where you drive).

The information generates a driving score, which you'll be able to view by logging in to your 123GO app. The better you drive, the better your price at your next renewal. So be sure to check in to the app regularly as it will provide useful tips on how to improve your scores.

Can I drive my car before the black box is fitted?

Yes, you are insured from your policy inception date, but you’ll need to get your black box fitted within the first 14 days of cover, or your policy may be cancelled. The box fitting process is really straightforward.

We’ll call you (normally within 48 hours) or you can give us a call on 015181434  to arrange for your black box to be fitted. It can be fitted at your home, work or place of study, at a time convenient to you.

How long will it take to fit the 123GO Box?

The fitting process takes on average 30 minutes for most cars. You will be given a set day for your appointment and then the evening before the appointment, you will get an SMS with a 4 hour slot for your appointment. (For example 8am – 12pm or 10am – 2pm) The engineer will also give you a call about 30 minutes before he arrives at your chosen location.

How big is the 123GO Box and where is it fitted in my car?

Your 123GO Box is a little larger than your average smart phone and will be fitted out of sight, usually under the dash or hood of your car, depending on the type of car you have.

Can the installation be done at any location?

It can be installed at pretty much any location of your choosing, like home, work or college. There are a few locations where we can't complete an installation and they are listed below:

  • Underground car parks or paid car parks
  • On a busy road in a built-up area
  • Islands off the main land - if you can bring your car to the main land, we can install the 123GO box
  • Some workplaces like army barracks or schools may not allow access so you'd need to get approval in advance

Will the 123GO Box damage my car?

No, it doesn’t interfere with any part of the car. The boxes are fitted by a qualified auto electrician, and are designed in a way that will not drain your car battery or cause any electrical faults. If there has been an issue with your box fitting, we would be more than happy to investigate this for you, so please do contact us. When your policy ends, the device is remotely deactivated and will not affect your cars performance, there is no requirement to remove it.

Is there an installation charge?

No, your insurance premium covers the cost of installation.

What happens if my 123GO Box stops working or is faulty, do I have to pay to get it fixed?

No, we have a team of experts monitoring the data transmitted by the 123GO Box to validate its accuracy and to keep an eye on any anomalies. If something is flagged as unusual or it looks like there is an issue with the 123GO Box, then we will contact you to arrange a service call at no cost. The only exception being if there is evidence that the 123GO Box was tampered with.

Will it be easy to detect if there were issues with the 123GO Box?

Yes, we have a team of experts monitoring the data transmitted by the 123GO Box to validate its accuracy and to keep an eye on any anomalies. If something is flagged as unusual or it looks like there is an issue with the 123GO Box then our engineers will contact you to arrange a service call.

What if I change my car mid-term?

When you change cars a new 123GO Box will need to be fitted to the new car and the device in your old car is remotely deactivated, so it is no longer transmitting data.

Can the 123GO box be switched off?

When your policy ends or when you change cars, the 123GO Box in the car is remotely deactivated. Otherwise the box will be left on at all times. If the 123GO Box is removed or tampered with, the policy may be cancelled.

Can I remove the 123GO box mid-year?

No, when your policy ends or when you change cars, the 123GO Box in the car is remotely deactivated. Otherwise the box will be left on and in the car at all times. If the 123GO Box is removed or tampered with, the policy may be cancelled.

What incentives or rewards are there for good driving?

If you are an inexperienced driver aged between 17 and 24, you will generally find that there is a more competitive price with 123GO than on our standard product for the same risk details. The better you drive, the better your renewal premium will be with us.

How will I know how well I am doing on my driving score?

Once you have the 123GO Box installed, it starts transmitting data. The 123GO Driver Score calculates your driving score based on the information captured via the black box installed in your car about each journey taken in your car. This includes data about:

  • Speed – driving within the safe speed limit!
  • Smoothness – how hard you accelerate, brake and corner
  • Usage – how much driving you do at night, the number of journeys you take and if you are driving for long periods without a break

You can log in to the 123GO app and monitor your scores. The app also provides useful tips on how to improve your scores for speed, smoothness and usage. So every time you drive, you have an opportunity to improve your score.

Can I call customer care at any time to see how my driving is doing?

You can log in to the 123GO app and monitor your scores. The app also provides useful tips on how to improve your scores for speed, smoothness and usage. So every time you drive, you have an opportunity to improve your score. If you have any queries about your score, please feel free to contact 123.ie Customer Care on 01 5246029.

Do things outside of my control affect my driving score e.g. speed bumps, sharp corners, sudden braking to avoid accidents?

The 123GO Driver Score calculates your driving score based on the information captured via the black box installed in your car about each journey taken. This includes data about:

  • Speed – driving within the safe speed limit!
  • Smoothness – how hard you accelerate, brake and corner
  • Usage – how much driving you do at night, the number of journeys you take and if you are driving for long periods without a break

Your scores are calculated to help you make decisions about how you’d like to drive. We’d like to reassure you that your smoothness score is not affected by potholes or road conditions, unless you suddenly brake, accelerate or corner.

Occasional instances of this will not impact your overall score heavily. However, if you do this in a high proportion of the kilometres you’ve driven then your smoothness score will go down.

What if I am driving late at night or going on long journeys?

Driving at night, the number of journeys you take and if you are driving for long periods without a break affect your usage score which you can monitor in the 123GO app.
Drivers that travel a lot or for long periods of time, should take breaks regularly to avoid fatigue. We encourage safe driving to keep both you and other road users safe.

Will my policy be cancelled for poor driving or for breaking the speed limits?

With safety being at the core of what 123GO is, we will contact you if we detect unacceptable driving behaviour such as speeding above the speed limit. Unacceptable driving may result in your policy being cancelled.

What information does the 123GO box collect?

Your 123GO Box will measure and transmit various aspects of how your car is driven. These measurements will include (but are not limited to) the speed the car is travelling at, braking frequency and force, acceleration, cornering and sudden manoeuvres, kilometres travelled, time and date of travel and the car’s location. The 123GO Box will continue to record how the car is driven regardless of who is driving the car and these measurements will contribute to your driving style score.

Does it track my location at all times?

Yes, the 123GO box has a GPS signal which will show you the last known location of the car. This is really handy if your car was stolen or if you were involved in an accident, as we can locate it very quickly.

Do you pass the data to third parties?

For data related queries please follow the link to our Data Protection Statement at 123.ie/general-terms-conditions

Do I have to buy my kilometres up front on the 123GO car insurance policy?

123GO is a kilometre-based policy so you can drive for the number of kilometres you select during your quote. With the 123GO Mobile App you will be able to keep track of your kilometre usage. You can call us to top up your kilometres as you go, however it is cheaper to buy your kilometres at the quote stage rather than top up throughout the year.

What happens if I use up the kilometres I have bought or go over my kilometre allowance?

At any time during the period of insurance you can call 123.ie on 01 5246029 to buy more kilometres. We will contact you if you’re looking likely to run out of kilometres.

If you exceed the kilometres available and continue driving, then your policy may cancel. You can prevent cancellation by topping up.

Is there a charge for kilometre top-ups?

Yes, 123GO is a kilometre-based policy. You can top-up in increments of 1000kms however it is cheaper to buy kilometres at quote stage rather than throughout the year.

Can I add a driver to my 123GO policy?

Yes, just call us to do this on 01 5246029. The driver will need to meet our acceptance criteria and we’ll need to gather some details before we can offer a quote for the driver. The car is monitored regardless of who is driving so it’s important to note that their driving style affects your score. In addition, the kilometres they drive will also be deducted from the remaining kilometres on the policy.

What if someone borrows my car?

You can loan your car to another person as long as they have sufficient cover to drive the car. The car is monitored regardless of who is driving so it’s important to make them aware that their driving style affects your score. In addition, the kilometres they drive will also be deducted from the remaining kilometres on the policy.

Do you have to be a certain age to buy 123GO?

Any driver from the age of 17 up that meets our acceptance criteria can buy this product. However, it’s targeted at young and/or inexperienced drivers and this category of driver will see the greatest financial benefit in comparison to our standard insurance product, provided you meet our other acceptance criteria.

Do you accept foreign driving licences?

We accept all UK and EU driving licences.

Can you buy this if you have no driving experience?

Yes, 123GO doesn’t require you to have already earned driving experience in the past.

If I am involved in a serious accident, will you contact emergency services?

If you are involved in an accident, the 123GO box may trigger an alert message to us, and if your car is not moving, we may try to contact you.

If you need assistance we’ll be happy to help you on your way or arrange for your car to be recovered to one of our repairers. If we cannot contact you, we may send an SMS asking you to contact us. We will only try to contact the number provided by you.

Please don’t assume we will contact you, or any emergency services, after an incident has occurred. We will try to make contact with you, and, if we think it necessary, we will contact the emergency services, however you should take all appropriate steps to protect your safety and report any incident to the appropriate emergency services and to us.
