How will making a claim impact my policy?

For Car Insurance Customers

If a claim is made, your policy will be affected in a different way depending on the type of no claims discount protection you have. You can check the level of cover and discount protection on your policy schedule in the policy details section.

No Protection

If you currently have a Third Party, Fire & Theft Lite or a Comprehensive Lite policy and you make a claim, your no claims discount is not protected, so this means that your no claims discount will be reduced to 0 years at your next renewal.

No Claim Discount Step Back – Section 13

If you have this included on your policy you will see Section 13 indicated in the policy details section of your insurance schedule.

If you make a claim, your no claims discount will be reduced by 3 years at your next renewal. For example, if your last renewal offer included a 5 years no claims discount and you make a claim, then no claims discount will be reduced to 2 years at your next renewal.

If two or more claims arise or are made during the complete year of insurance, the no claims discount will be reduced to zero at the next renewal.

No Claim Discount Protected – Section 7

If you have this included on your policy you will see Section 7 indicated in the policy details section of your insurance schedule.

Under this section you can make one unlimited claim in a consecutive three-year period without affecting the no claims discount.

If you make a claim, your no claims discount will remain the same at your next renewal, it will not increase. 

If you have a second claim, your no claims discount will be reduced as detailed above in Section 13 No Claim Discount - Step Back.

You will not qualify to purchase protection under this policy until 3 consecutive claims free years have passed. When that time expires, we will not automatically re-add this cover, you will need to request to add this back on to your policy.

Please note:

Policies with Section 7 or Section 13 included that were set up prior to 21st Nov 2014 for new business or renewed with a renewal date prior to 1st January 2015 will have different cover under this section, you should check the policy booklet link in your new business pack or your renewal pack for further details. Alternatively, you can call our customer care team on 01 524 6029.

In addition, no claims discount protection and step-back both protect the percentage discount given on your policy only. There may be an additional premium applied at your renewal depending on your claims history.

For Home Insurance Customers

If a claim is made on your Home Insurance policy any no claims discount that you are earning will be reduced to 0 years at your next renewal.

There may be an additional premium applied at your renewal depending on your claims history.
